The Eutrophication potential (EP) is a category of impact assessment in the course of a life cycle assessment. Over-fertilisation refers to the excess of nutrients and the change of state of water bodies and soils to a nutrient-rich (eutrophic) state. For example, excess nutrients promote algae growth and reduce oxygen availability, which can lead to the death of fish. The eutrophication potential is expressed in PO4 equivalent per functional unit, as the relative contribution of a substance to eutrophication of the environment.
